Weekend Edition: How the Full Moon Heals
and a full moon inspired Yoga Nidra for clarity and inner peace
I have always loved watching the moon. Ever since I was a little girl, watching the moon has felt like a point of connection, soothing to the soul. I have often wondered if this was because having moved across the world to a new country at a young age, I felt as though the only thing that really felt the same, all those miles apart was the moon. I felt as though I could stare up at the moon and somehow still be connected to my friends back home.
When I was in my early twenties, my grandpa passed away and I, once again, was living abroad. I couldn’t make it back home for his funeral, so instead I walked down to the beach near where I was living and with the waves crashing onto the beach around me, I said my goodbyes to the moon. Somehow it felt as though that was the best way for my grandpa to hear me, to feel my love, to know that even though I didn’t go back to say goodbye, I still remembered him.
I woke up to the October Supermoon shining into my bedroom window on Thursday morning and couldn’t help but look out in awe. And I started thinking, it’s not just me that has been captivated by the moon.
For as long as humans have walked beneath the sky, the full moon has captivated us with its glowing, mysterious presence. Across cultures and traditions, the full moon has been seen as a symbol of healing, renewal, and deep feminine power. From ancient stories of lunar goddesses to modern rituals tied to witchcraft, the moon has always been a guiding force for those seeking transformation.
I thought it would be fun to explore some of these stories for this week’s Weekend Edition. As we journey through these stories, looking to uncover the moon’s role in healing throughout history, I think it’s interesting to explore the moon’s connection to yoga's view of our energetic channels that reflect the balance between moon and sun within our own bodies. And while that may seem ridiculously woo woo, I’d like to remind you that hospital staff always notice a difference when it’s a full moon. My mother used to be the head of the mental health wing of the hospital and she said you always knew when the full moon was because things got a little more hectic.
So without further ado, let’s dive in, explore and at the end, I’ve recorded a deeply restorative practice that can help you connect to this lunar energy: a full moon Yoga Nidra designed to soothe, balance, and heal.
