What Lies Behind the Camera
Before Nicola Docherty, who goes by Nic, and I hit record, we were chatting about all the things that you can’t see outside the camera frame… all the messy backgrounds that we don’t see in the final cuts. In our case we were talking about all of the stuff we have that doesn’t fit on shelves or in drawers. Mine? My little office is honestly hemorrhaging books.
My hubby and I have so many books, the above photo that I snapped to send to Nic to show her the disaster that is, is only a small portion of them. And since we’re currently living in a small flat… well, you see the result. I can’t wait to build a library in the new house! But that’s another story, for another day. I have so many more books I’d love (also need for Yoga Therapy) to add to my collection but honestly no space to fit them.
Real, print books are so much better than the digital versions. Don’t get me wrong, eBooks are fantastic for when you’re traveling or don’t have space (ahem…), but they just don’t cast the same magic for me that a print book does.
Talking about our messes behind the camera got me thinking about in general what we tuck out of the frame of our own lives. Whether it’s on film, social media or even down to your local bakery, we don’t tend to air out or show off all our baggage we might be hiding behind a pretty frame. Some of us may show up a little more authentic than others, sure enough, but most of us don’t walk around with our underwear on our head even if that may be how we’re feeling in the intimacy of private settings.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing. There are some things that the public (in whatever setting) just doesn’t need to be privy to. It’s okay to not share every detail with every person we come across. What we do need to remember is that it is important to share things with our support team around us. Not hold it in and avoid even looking at it ourselves.
