A Soothing Song For the Soul

One of my favorite things to do in the morning is listen to the birds around our house. Their voices are a kaleidoscope of chirping, tweeting and twittering. With the occasional cawing of crows and crying of seagulls. Watching the sweet little sparrows, robins and magpies (amongst others) flit between the trees and our rooftop is such a joy to be a part of. Not to mention catching sight of the ever watchful eyes of our two resident Little Owls (Athene Noctua). (Yes!! Ms. Little has seemingly found a mate!)

After living in the center of a coastal city for a decade with the main bird songs being that of pigeons and seagulls–which, to be fair, have their own type of delight–it’s so fun to live in a place where I can wake up to songbirds. It’s peaceful. And it’s a pleasure I certainly haven’t yet taken for granted.

Studies have shown that listening to nature sounds are incredibly soothing for humans. A 2022 Scientific Reports study found that listening to bird song significantly helped reduce anxiety and paranoia for the majority of the 295 people who participated in the study.
